WAIMATE VALUATION.
Another discussion arose at the County Council meeting on Wednesday, respecting the long delay in getting a proper valuation roll for Waimate district. The work had been let by contract, and a roll made np, but it had been twice returned as being defective. The Clerk had sent the roll to the valuer on the 6th July, informing him that if not completed in proper form for passing the Revision Court, the Council would obtain a fresh valuation. Mr Bridge : There is no provision to meet a case where a valuation roll had not been made in a previous year. Mr Yorke explained that the Waimate Board thought that the roll was likely to be farther delayed, and agreed at last meeting to invite tenders for a new valuation, and to apply for extension of time at which the roll should be open for public inspection. The Board thought it would pay to spend £25 for a new roll rather than go on waiting and perhaps get no roll at all. Chairman : I understand that the only legal body that could ask for an extension of time is the Council. We, as a Council, have to look at the; effect on the general rate of the County. I have reason to believe the Road Board will be told that the Council is the proper body to apply for extension of time. Mr' Bridge : I am given to understand that many valuations in that assessment will be objected to. The list having been returned to the valuer twice, I think we should refuse to accept it now and get a fresh one. Unless we object to the list ns a.wbolc and it is thrown out of Court, we shall have to pay for it,
although we know objections arc lo be raised by some owners when the list comes before - the Court. I propose a telegram be sent informing the valuer that if the list be not received by the end of this week, tenders will be called for making a fresh valuation. Chairman : If the roll be not received this week I shall call for fresh tenders. Telegram was accordingly sent. It will be observed that the Waimate Road Board has also invited tenders lor a valuation ; and it seems that each body is proceeding irrespective of the other to make a valuation for Waimate.
