In reference to road deviation for railway purposes at Normanby, a Wellington lawyer says —I am satisfied that there is no power in the Public Works Act to divert roads in connection with the construction of railways, but I believe that in the Bill relating to Public Works, now before the Assembly, the Government are asking for such powers, which will, no doubt, be given. Replying to a question, the Hon Mr Whitaker said that the Government in filling up Civil Service vacancies gave the preference to those who had suffered by the reductions. A contemporary retorts —Most excellent in theory, but how comes it that two sons of Colonel Trimble, a comparatively new settler, have been pitchforked into the public service. Were the discharged Civil Servants temporarily forgotten ? Messrs Petherick and Scott are the successful tenderers for the Railway Hotel at Hawera.
