FROZEN MEAT FROM MELBOURNE.
The most important shipment of frozen meat yet sent from Australia to England was despatched from Melboiftne in the s.s. Protos last trip. The shipment, consists of over 4000 carcases of sheep and 200 bodies of beef. The Argus says the means at the disposal of the Melbourne Frozen Meat Exportation Company were not equal to freezing such a large quantity of meat in the time, and about 1500 sheep were frozen at the Works of the Australian Ice Company, Prince’s Bridge. The freezing has been done by the ordinary icemaking machinery, the cells in which the water is converted into ice being removed to make room for the carcases. About 500 sheep were frozen at a time, the process occupying about three days. The last of the carcases of sheep frozen at,the Australian Ice Company’s works were sent on board the Protos on June 27, and if they are a fair sample of the whole shipment the consumers in England will be very favorably impressed with Australian meat. There were also in the freezing tanks several hampers of game and some really magnificent joints of roasting beef, which are being sent privately as presents to friends in the Old Country. Some mountain geese had been placed carefully in the tanks, and were frozen in such peculiar positions that it was found impossible to pack them in their present shape. The managing engineer, Mr B. Long, is now making preparations to receive the consignment of English fish by the s.s. Cuzco, which is expected to arrive shortly. The's.s. Europa will be the next vessel laid on to carry frozen meat to England.
