WAVERLEY.

The Mail has over 90 subserbers between Whenualcura and Waitotara. BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL, Friday' Evening. There is no doubt that the commercial depression which has for so long being hanging over us will soon be a thing of the past, evidence being plainly visible on all sides of good times coming. During all the hard times, however, a noticeable feature as regards our district plainly proved beyond all doubt that the name the district had for the fertility of its soil was not a name only. While in most parts of the colony we heard of land and property deprecating in value, the price of land in this district still maintained the same value. There is now every prospect of prices ruling higher than ever. A farm of some four hundred acres changed hands last week, at £l3 5s per acre ; Mr Mitchell being the vendor, and Mr John Morton the purchaser. School matters in the district are rather interesting at the present time, and the present School Committee have a lively time of it. The following memorandum from the Inspector was shown me the other day, and may be of interest : “ I am well pleased with the general appearance of the pupil teachers. They are altogether in a progressive state, and afford a striking instance of the natural effect of influential and judicious supervision.” While on the subject of school committees, it seems to me that the mode of procedure at elections needs altering, the cumulative system of voting, though probably intended to give the minority a chance, often producing strange results. I believe, however, our committee amongst others represented this some time back. A class for the purpose of teaching the theory of music has been started by Mr A. Taylor, whose knowledge of the subject should induce our rising generation to take advantage of the chance of learning the divine art.
