WAVERLEY.

The Mail has over 90 subserhers between Whenuakura and Waiiotara. BRANCH OFFICE OF TIIE MAIL, WAVERLEY TOWN BOARD. The monthly meeting of the Town Board was held on Monday, 25th instant, at Mr Fookes’ office. Present ; Messrs Iteid, Bowie, McFarlane, Taylor, and the Chairman. Letter from G. Proposed by Mr Taylor, seconded by Mr Read, and carried, That Mr Bowie be empowered to make the necessary alterations in front of Mr Ross’s property. Proposed by Mr Bowie, seconded by Mr McFarlane, and carried, That tenders be called for the lease of the cricket ground for six months. Proposed by Mr Taylor, seconded by Mr Read, and carried, That nolico be given that a rate of Is in the pound be made for the year ending March 31st, 1882 ; That a meeting for the purpose be held on May 2nd ; That the rate bo payable in one instalment on June Ist, and the rate book lie at Mr Mason’s office. Proposed by Mr Bowie, seconded by Mr McFarlane, and carried, That the chairman write to the County Council and Wairoa Highway Board, requesting them to cooperate with the Town Board in obtaining a supply of gravel from the Government pit on the railway lino at Waitotara. Considerable excitement was caused on Tuesday evening by the alarm of lire being raised, Mr Woolston’s hotel having a narrow escape from being consumed. It seems one of the children had gone into one of the bedrooms wilh a lighted candle to - look for a book, and by standing the candle on a box in the room had set fire to the curtains. The glare was observed by some persons on the other side of the street, who promptly lent their assistance, and with the aid of a few 7 buckets of water the fire w'as soon extinguished ; not however before a considerable quantity of clothing was destroyed and one side of the room perfectly bluchered.
