NEW WHEAT PEST.

•Some wheat which has been grown in the neighbourhood of Gawler by Mr Eggar is (says the South Australian Adccriixrr of January 22) of a most peculiar description, and should it be capable of germination is likely to introduce as great a pest as red rust. The oars have all the appearance of being moderately full, but when they are examined the contents, instead of being grains of corn, as expected, arc nothing but small shrivelled black seeds. Mr Eggar says the seed which he sowed was purchased fio:n the neighbourhood of Lyndoch, and on opening and emptying the bags he found them full of similar black seeds. He fanned them out to the best of his ability, but could not clear them all, and the ears which he exhibited arc the produce of those that remained. His crop has suffered considerably in consequence. Should it really be a fact that these grains germinate, farmers will have to be exceedingly careful with their seed or they will introduce anew pest on their farms as blighting in its effects as cither smut or rust. .Some experiments as to the germinating power of the seed arc to be made.
