RECEIVED LAST NIGHT,
DREADFUL EARTHQUAKE. 5,000 LIVES LOST. London, 6tb. An earthquake of a terrible character is reported on the island of Chio, off the coast of Smyrna, Asia Minor. The results have been most disastrous to life and property . Fully 5,000 persons have met with their deaths. LORD BBACONSPIELD’S RELAPSE. London, 7th. Earl Beaconsfield has suffered a serious relapse during the night, and is again in a critical state. Sir William Jenner, one of the physicians in ordinary to the Queen, has been summoned to confer with other medical attendants of his Lordship. DISTURBANCES IN IRELAND. Dublin, 6th. Serious disturbances have occured at Ballinamore, Ireland, to-day, between the police and the people. The latter were fired upon by the police, and a girl in the crowd was shot dead, and several rioters severely wounded. VISIT of BRITISH SQUADRON. London, 6th. A detached squadron of five ironclads, with two sons of the Prince of Wales, is to sail from the Cape of Good Hope to Melbourne and other Australian ports.
