SUMMARY OF NEWS. French-Canadian operatives are emigrating in large numbers to tbe United States. Scarlet fever and diptheria have become epedcmic in parts of Canada. At a cartridge manufactory in America tbe machinery is turning out 300,000 per day for Constantinople. A mass meeting in sympathy with the Boers was held at Chicago. There are nine thousand Dutchmen in the City. The great drapery establishment of Boulevard and Haussmann has been burned down, and several lives lost. This loses to insurance companies 7,000,000 francs. 26 persons were injured. Whole villages in Posen, in Prussia proper, and Soetswig, are represented as deserted, the residents emigrating to America. The Government are doing all in their power to check the influence of immigration agents from the United States but in vain. The Boers, by order from J onbert, have dispossessed all the inhabitants of Utrecht who are loyal to the British, and ordered their homesteads to be burnt. Cholera is raging in Chicago, and is attributed to the general use of butterine or oleomargarine. A 50,000 dollar relief fund for Michael Davitt has been started in San Francisco. The contributors are limited to 25 cents. In the Lenten Pastorals of the Irish Catholic Bishops, the people are earnestly warned against joining illegal and secret combinations, while the strongest sympathy was expressed for those on trial for sedition. An attempt to hold a Home Eule meeting under the auspices of Authur O’Connor and Finnegan, led to a free light. The Archbishop of Dublin assails tbe Land League in a Lenten Pastoral, also the ladies associated in the movement. The ladies intend to reply. Ashmead Bartlett, the husband of Miss BurdettCoutts, is threatened with a breach of promise suit. A Fenian Lodge has been discovered in Lancashire, where arms were secreted. The Porte has ordered 30,000,000 cartridges from the United States, to be delivered in three months from February. The Catholic orphanage at Hyde Park, Scrimton, Pa., is burnt down. 17 children were lost, 14 boys and 3 girls. Lord Odo Russell has been raised to the Peerage, with the title of Baron Ampthill.

Chinese have been refused naturalisation as American citizens in the United States Circuit Courts. The Hawaiian Islands are devastated by small-pox recently imported from Canton. The white inhabitants are flying in dismay, although the roads and paths leaning out of Honolulu are closely' guarded. The mail steamers will not take anything on board except the mails, and remain outside the reef to receccive them. Garfield’s inauguration was a brilliant affair.
