ATTEMPTED ASSASSINATION.
“ Topia,” in the Wanganui Chronicle , mentions two attempts at assassination reported last week, the intended victim in one case being Major Kemp, and as per reports in Wellington papers, the fatal bullet, fired in the most public of public thoroughfares, being meant to settle either Mr Croumbie-Brown or Mr Gillon of the Press Association. The correspondent asks “ Can these things be true ? Would anyone be so base as to deprive the Government of such a staunch supporter as Te Keepa, or the Lyttelton Times of such a special correspondent as the gentleman who “ at one time held a confidential position on General Grant’s staff?” If CroumbieBrown had been up the river last week I should have been inclined to swear that he had had a hand in Kemp’s affair, but, as it is, local talent must be credited with the report. As for the Wellington case I am in great doubt, and will only remark that when two such men as Croumbie and Gillon get together there is no saying what extraordinary things the public might hear of.”
