RECEIVED LAST NIGHT. CIVIL SERVICE REPORT. Wellington, 4th. Messrs Seed and Batkin have made their report touching reductions in civil service, and have recommended certain measures whereby £IO,OOO per annum may be saved, through reductions in the department of justice ; and as they 7 have to visit the South Island, further large reductions will follow. The reductions contemplated arc not specified. FIRE AT PARIHAKA. Wellington, 4th. The Parihaka settlement to-day had another escape from destruction by conflagration. Bush fires were the cause. Men, women, and children worked hard to prevent the fire spreading over the settlement. LATEST ITEMS. The proposal to start a new morning paper in Wellington has collapsed. The schooner Richard and Mary has stranded at Nelson. A new gold reef at Te Aroha is reported.
