RECEIVED LAST NIGHT . WELLINGTON GOSSIP. The Asylum enquiry having concluded, all that remains is for the Commission to visit the asylum and report to the Government. A deputation of virtuous citizens have waited on the City Council asking them to set aside a piece of land outside the town-belt as a reservation for the ‘“‘soiled doves ” of Wellington to live on. The Council will consider it. The Government offer bonuses for the manufacture of powder and beet sugar. Five thousand acres of land at Otaki are to be surveyed for deferred payment settlement. Some members opposed to the Government have offered £SOO subsidy towards starting an Opposition paper—so says rumour.
