KAKARAMEA.
(K 11 031 0U 11 CORK E SPOSDE K T.) Monday Evening. Mr Powdrell passed through the town to-day en route for Turakina, with the following racehorses: —Miss Emma, Hailstorm, Tally-ho, and Ely. Miss Emma is engaged for the Turakina Handicap on the 4th March. The other horses will be kept at Wanganui until the Wanganui meeting of the 9th. Hailstorm, which it will be remembered caught a severe cold at Napier, has now recovered his old form. All the animals are well known to the public, with the exception of Ely, the 2-year-old, who will make his debut in the Sapling Stakes at Wanganui. Several of our leading settlers have done a wise thing by investing their money in the purchase of the valuable rams which Mr Barker offered for sale on Saturday last. There is no doubt that new blood is needed, and it is to be hoped an improvement in the various flocks of the district will amply recompense the purchasers for their outlay. The re-opening of Mr M’Rae’s boilingdown establishment is a source of rejoicing to many paterfamiliases who have an eye to cheap legs of mutton and other small delicacies. Some of the fattest sheep ever seen here from the Messrs Williamson’s run were bought by Mr M’Eae for the purpose of converting into tallow.
Last week Mr W. Ginger’s little daughter met with rather a serious accident. Just after rising from table her foot caught in the carpet, causing her to fait heavily. Her parents seeing- she had sustained considerable injury conveyed her to Dr Croft, who found that there was both dislocation and fracture of the arm. Every attention was shown to her, and I am pleased to say the little sufferer is doing as well as can be expected. The long drought is over. Yesterday we had a good downpour, which has already changed the appearance of the paddocks. Another 12 hours rain would have done no harm. I trust, however, that we shall have fine weather on Wednesday, as a number of ladies and gentlemen who have kindly promised to assist at the entertainment in the Town Hall hj ave to come from a distance.
