MARKETS

CANTERBURY GRAIN & PRODUCE. (From the Canterbury Times.) The market during the past week has shown a more active tone. Considerable business in most lines has transpired lately, and the arrivals of grain by rail have set in, all of which point to the fact that the grain season of 1881 has fairly commenced. Wheat. —The values quoted last week still represent what is being given for wheat. Good milling is quoted at 3s fid to 3s fid, while for Tuscan 3s 8d is being given. Fancy parcels might realize a shade over these prices. Oats. —Oats are being offered freely. Milling samples stand at Is fijd to Is 7d. Feed quality, Is 3d to Is fid. The market for the better class would be more active if freights were not so scarce. Barley. —3s to 8s fid is quoted for best sorts. Inferior range from 2s 3d to 2s fid. The business in this grain, however, has not yet become so general. Flour has receded. Best town brands selling at £lO. Grass Seed is unaltered. Not much is being done in rye-grass. Cocksfoot has seen fair business at 2Ad to 2Jd, for large lines. Dairy Produce. —Cheese and butter are quoted at 3d to 3£d and fid respectively. CANTERBURY STOCK REPORT. (From Canterbury Times.) At the Addington Yards on Wednesday last 8860 sheep, 378 cattle, and 155 pigs were penned. There was a good attendance, and bidding was fair for all rates. Best quality crossbreds realised 12s 3d ; good ditto, from 9s 9d to 10s fid ; medium quality, from 7s to 7s lOd. Wo quote mutton at 2d per lb. Lambs, though only in small supply, met with a ready sale. Prime lots sold up to 9s 3d, others from 6s to Bs. A good supply of stores were cleared out at late rates. Cattle. —The bulk of the cattle were of an indifferent quality, prices, however, being a shade better than last week. Prime beef sold at an average of 17s fid per 100 lb. Stores were in limited supply, two-year-old steers selling at £4 ss. Pigs. —Best lots sold at £2 10s.
