KAKAEAMEA.

(from our correspondent.) Monday Evening. Sport or Malice ?—Last week a valuable horse belonging to Mr Hansen, settler, was found dead in the township, and on examination it was proved that a charge of small shot had put an end to his career. A cow belonging also to Mr Hansen was wounded, it is supposed by the same means. Sporting, when legally carried on, is all very well, hut when valuable domestic animals are wantonly destroyed, it is but right that the “ tall ” sportsmen should be made to pay a heavy penalty for such amusement. The affair has caused a good deal of excitement, and is being investigated by the police. The long-looked-for entertainment in aid of the Institute is at last coming off on Wednesday week, as will appear by advertisement. I am informed that it promises, should the weather be favorable, to he one of the best if not the best ever given here. In addition to the usual carte of songs and recitations, there will he several novel features introduced, among which may be mentioned a trapeze performance, and a mysterious dance, which will be performed for the first time in public. These attractions it is to he hoped will have the effect of filling the Town Hall to overflowing. It seems a great pity that literary institutions should have, through lack of subscribers, to rely on entertainments of this kind for their support. In-gathering of grain-crops is about over, and threshing has commenced. As but one or two farmers have finishedoperations, it would be premature to give any account of the yield. It is rumoured that we are to have a visit from the Patea Rifles some fine evening. I am sure the townspeople would be glad to seem them, and if they would stay for an hour or so and their band would enliven us with martial strains, the novel treat would be appreciated.
