CANTERBURY HARVEST.
The Ashburton Mail say's —Thanks to the splendid harvest weather, a third of the grain is now in stack or saved. There are a few machines threshing out of the stock, and in one or two instances we notice that grain so threshed is very brittle and dry, and would certainly have been a far superior sample if stacked in the ordinary way. Respecting prices there have been a few samples of wheat offering, but the farmers seem to require too heavy a figure for the merchant to meet him, and lower prices will have to be taken before any large transactions are reported. With a few exceptions the wheat offering is a very superior sample. Barley is not so good generally' as in some former years. The grain is bright and of a good color, but rather thin to our liking, and one is afraid it will not realise the high prices some of our farmers expect. In oats there is such a large stock in hand held by the merchants that the prices will not be much altered.
