HAWERA.

The Mail has over 90 subscribers between' Manutald and Stratford. BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL, Monday Evening. The Opuuake sports took place on Saturday last, and I believe were very successfully carried out. Cahill was rather “ chucked in” for the cup and won easily, Vaughan pulled ofi! the mile, and Packer the hurdles. The cricket match Colonials v. the World was played on the Hawera ground on Saturday, and was won easily by the former by 72 runs, the Colonials getting in their first innings 60, to which G. Bayly contributed 42, and in their second 123, to which Riddiford contributed 59, and G. Bayly 33. The World made in their first innings 52, Southey being the highest scorer with 11, and Flint 10 ; in their second innings they put togethers9, Fraser not out 17, and White 12, being the only double figures, The cricketers here are awaiting anxiously for a reply to their many letters and telegrams to the Agent for the Australians to arrange a match here. I see by the papers that they are going to Wanganui, so that they might after all be induced to pay Hawera a visit. If so, they will find a very fair 22 against them. The contractors are getting on with the apology for a Court House and Land Office. It will look about the meanest public building in the colony when completed. Considering the revenue that is being derived from land in the Taranaki Provincial District, and particularly this pait, I think Hawera is justly entitled to some consideration in the matter of public buildings. The Lock-up (?) here is simply disgraceful. Why the Government ever put the grand police barracks at such places as Waitotara and Manutahi, and left Hawera out in the cold, will always remain a mystery.
