HORSE RACE.
A match for £2O a-side was run on the Wanganui Racecourse on Saturday, between Mr'Chitham’s horse Dan, and Mr Brewer’s mare Camelia. There were over 200 persons on the ground, and much interest was taken in the race, though, from the superior condition of the mare, there was a pretty general opinion that Dan could not beat her. It was some two or three seconds after the fall of the flag before the horses got away, but they both left the post well together-, the horse having the best of it by a foot or so. Camelia got on level terras before the quarter-mile post was reached, and from thence till they were a couple of hundred yards past the halfmile, the race was a very pretty one. For the best part of this distance they ran together so closely tliat from the stand it looked as if only one horse was racing. When nearing the three-quarter-mile post Dan drew away gradually, and though the mare did her best, she could not answer him. At the turn of the straight Dan was leading by three lengths, but could easily have doubled that distance. The time was Imin 49£secs from the start, and Imin Slsecs from the fall of the flag. Mr C. H. Chavannes acted as starter, and Dr Earle as judge. Dan was ridden by young Hatfield, and a boy named Connor was put on Camelia. Chronicle.
