FOUR RAILWAYS FOR MEXICO.
Tlio latest direction in winch American capitalists arc bending tlieir energies is Mexico. In a speech at a banquet given to the Mexican Minister in New York, Grant made such a powerful showing in favor of American enterprise taking hold of Mexico and building railroads and telegraphs through that country, that at its close a syndicate was formed consisting, among others, of Jay Gould, Vanderbilt, and Scott, with Grant at the head, to obtain concessions from Mexico, and open it up thoroughly by railroads.. This, writes a correspondent, will certainly revolutionise affairs in the sister Republic, in which four trunk railroads are now in course of construction—one by British and three by American capital. The trade of Mexico will bo developed and drift, under reciprocity, into American hands. It is now controlled by Gorman houses, which do nothing whatever to improve the materia] condition of the country.
