Bridge lias resigned the office of Chairman of the High way Board, and is succeeded by Mr A. Aiken. While a monopoly is not to be desired, Mr Aiken in taking the chair has an arduous task before him, as he succeeds a man who in his public capacitj' spares neither time nor trouble in looking after the interests of the district. It is much easier to succeed a chairman who has done too little than one who, as some find when weighed in their balance, has done too much. Shooting. —The annual firing for the District Cavalry prizes took place on Saturday afternoon. A high wind was blowing, and the weather was altogether unsuited for firing. Nevertheless the wonderfully good score of 49 was made by Mr Alexander Aiken, who scored highest in the match. The Weatheii is still very unsettlsd. We had a heavy fall of rain towards evening yesterday, and to-day it is cloudy and cold. The season is very unfavourable for shearing, and those who have begun to cut their hay could put up with a week’s calm weather.
