Oliver says :—“ With regard to my owning shares in the Waiinea Plains railway, as soon as the fact—mentioned by myself in the House—appeared to afford ground for Opposition attack, I authorised the sale at any price of the 25 shares which I had subscribed for, and before the close of the session I learnt that they were sold. The precise date of transfer I do not recollect, but it was at the beginning of this year, during the few weeks which 1 spent at Dunedin. It shows pretty conclusively the spirit in which malevolent people judge one’s actions, that the paltry sum of £37 10s should be supposed to afford sufficient motive for a particular treatment of that line by mo.” A Chinese settlement is springing up in Northern Australia, between Caims and Port Douglas. The main industry is sugar manufacture, in which there arc already 100 Celestials employed, and a large addition to their number is expected next year. Dwellings are being erected in some instances, and there arc at least ten Chinese women expected out to join their husbands shortly.

Sire—-Mr Kettle’s imported horse Sir William Wallace. Sir William Wallace is a beautiful dark bay with black points, and was foaled January 7th, 1872. For symmetry, strength, and action, he stands unrivalled. He is perfectly quiet, docile, and tractable. No horse approaches him in quality and quantity of bone, muscle, and hair. He a sure foalgetter, and his stock are turning out firstclass. He has taken the Champion Prize in Wanganui two years in succession, viz., in 1878 and 1879. For pedigree and further particulars, see large cards. Fee—Single mares, at £4 10s; reduction made for two or more mares. Groomage fee, 2s 6d, to be paid when the mare is served. Fees payable on January Ist, 1881. Paddock for mares free for one month, after which a charge of Is fid per week will be made. Every care taken but no responsibility.
