HAWERA.

The Mail has over 90 subscribers between Munutuld and Stratford. BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL , Wednesday Evening. It was with a great sigh of relief that the people of Hawcra heard that Tula had confessed to the Opunaki crime. Notwithstanding that the evidence was so conclusive, the confession settled any lingering doubts. Great sympathy was expressed for Stanner, who was the unfortunate victim of circumstances, and many were the hearty greetings on his arrival yesterday. From what I can hear from the Maoris it is in no way a political crime ; and they one and all express abhorrence at the murder of the young ladj r . The prisoner’s own confession is simply that he went for plunder, and succeeded in getting Gs 4d from her ore he stabbed her. A meeting was held on Saturday last to take steps for holding the annual sports on Now Year’s day. The balance-sheet for last year showed a credit in hand of £‘2G 14s Id. A committee was formed, consisting of Messrs McLdowie, Lukis, Flint, Adamson, Wolner, Broadbent, Bate, and Cunningham (hon. sec). About £2O was collected in the room. A long discussion then ensued about the sports committee using the cricket ground. Mr White, on behalf of the Cricket Club, pointed out that the club had been to great expense in laying down the ground and planting it ; that at present the club was £2O in debt ; and ho thought if the sports committee were going to make use of the ground, the Cricket Club should make a small charge for entrance. Mr Farrington concurred in what had fallen from Mr White, independent of any question of legality. He thought that there would be few in Hawera so ungenerous as to pay a small entrance. After further discussion, it was decided to leave it to the two committees to arrange. The Government have refused all the tenders for work from Manaia to Stratford road. It seems a mania with the present Government to call for tenders in this district and not accept any when sent in. Good hard working men tell me there is not wages to be made at the prices work is taken for at presont, yet the Government want to get it done cheaper still.
