THE GOVERNOR’S RECEPTION.
Sir Arthur Gordon arrived in Wellington on Monday afternoon, per Hinemoa steamer from Auckland. A large number of yachts had been waiting, and came up the harbor with the Hincmoa about five o’clock.
The Governor was accompanied ashore by the Premier, AttorneyGeneral, and other Ministers, also the Mayor and Councillors of Wellington and members of the Legislature. On reaching the platform the following address was read by the Town Clerk: To His Excellency Hon. Sir A, H. Gordon, G.C.M.G., Governor of New Zealand, &c. We, the Mayor and Councillors of the City of Wellington, desire, on behalf of the citizens whom we represent, to welcome your Excellency on your arrival on the shores of New Zealand, and at the seat of Government. The high estimation in which you arc held for the eminent services hitherto rendered by you as representative of the Queen in other colonies is well-known to ns. We desire to assure you that the citizens of Wellington will be ever ready to show their loyalty and devotion to Her Most Gracious Majesty by assisting you in maintaining peace, and order, and good Government of this portion of Her Majesty’s dominions.” His Excellency, in a few words,
thanked the citizens for the hearty welcome, and hoped pence would always bo maintained in the colony. A procession was then formed, and proceeded to Government House, where His Excellency was sworn in.
