A post mortem examination held on a cow that died in America discovered six fully-developed calves, the smallest of which weighed 224 lbs. The cow was a three-year-old shorthorn. About 10,000 tons of potatoes arc lying rotting in the Mount Gambier district, South Australia, It is stated that people could have them for the trouble of carting away, but no one will avail themselves of the oiler. In consequence of the inadequacy of the allotment of £IOOO for school buildings to Hawke’s Bay the Education Board there has had to arrange to take £2OOO from the general account and transfer it to the building fund. All the teachers’ salaries are being reduced to make up the deficiency'.

The Irish Difficulty.— A London message says that at a Cabinet Council it was decided by Ministers that it is unnecessary to adopt measures of coercion for the suppression of the prevailing disorder in Ireland, ns Government has sufli" eicnt power under existing laws to deal with the agitation. It was therefore, moreover, decided that it is not necessary to call Parliament together in December. It is understood, however, that Ministers decided that when Parliament meets in the ordinary course a Bill shall be introduced to deal with the Irish laud question.

On Sunday night wc were out sitting in the moonlight, unusually' silent, almost sad. More recently' 200 barrels of grapes, shipped from Australia, have been offered for sale by' auction in the expectation that they would fetch 40s per barrel. There was only a bunch or two good in each barrel.

A few months ago an old gentleman was seen nailing a notice on a fence on the south side of Galveston avenue.
