HAWERA.

The Mail has over 90 subscribers between Manutahi and Stratford. BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL, Wednesday Evening. The Minister for Native Affairs and the Minister for Public Works arrived here from New Plymouth on Monday evening, and paid a visit to the Plains on Tuesday morning. They went south by coach the same day. Mr Rollcston expressed himself much surprised and pleased with the country. Mr Parris returned from Pariliaka on Monday. I believe after the meeting he had a long private conversation with To Whiti, but of course the purport has not transpired. The Government are still making To Whiti important by constantly

interviewing him and asking his sanction to all manner of things. Why can’t they ignore him, and thus let him see they can do tilings without his consent or approval? The “unemployed” system docs not seem to be working well, and the Government have decided to pay the men off and call for work in small contracts, for which of course they will have the option of tendering. Next Friday the Hawera Cavalry have their district prize firing, and it was thought by some one or two enthusiasts to make a collection for money or articles to be fired for, as well as the Government money. The canvass lias resulted in all sorts of articles—boor, boots, linen, pipes, pig, revolver, cigars, &c., given to be competed for. The end of the year approaching brings us into the sports time, and Hawera is seldom backward in these matters. A meeting is called for next Saturday to elect a committee, &c. I believe there is a good sum in hand from last New Year’s day sports.
