Ten loads of gravel have been deposited on York-street at a cost of £2 7s 6d. Day’ labour has] been employed in clearing rushes on Dovon-strect, filling in ruts on Dorset-street, spreading gravel on York" street, and on several other streets, cutting thistles, and clearing out water-ways, amounting to 64 days at 11s per day. The engineer received instructions to prepare plans for improvements authorised on Derby, Meredith, and York-streets, Said plans have been forwarded to the Board.” The Engineer reported that “According to instructions I have taken the permanent levels of Derby-street, Meredith-street, and Middleecx-strcet (extended). I have fixed the coiners of Meredith-street, and would call the attention of the Board to the question of fence removal being considered before the contracts for gravelling footpath on the south side are let. There is an encroachment of nearly' 3 feet upon the street at its centre. I have taken levels and prepared specifications for the removal of the mound at junction of Bedford and York-streets- I have also to call urgent notice to the fact of no clay having been cut in the Dorset-street contract. It will be finished within a few days, and if nothing is done to secure the embankment and batten of cutting, it will be trodden into uselessness by cattle, and the money lost which has been expended. Clay could be procured from a street about three chains from the present cutting. I have made a survey of road near Hospital, but on account of discrepancies of boundaries I was obliged to request advice from the chief surveyor in New Plymouth, and thus will not be able to snpply the finished plan of this survey (required by the Board) until next meeting.” The Inspector of Nuisances reported : “ I have the honor to report the removal or abatement of the following nuisances— Removal of nuisance from sections at the rear of Masonic Hotel. Abatement of nuisauce at the rear of City Butchery ; abatement of nuisance in Leicester-street. 1 also caused closet to be erected to property owned by Mr S. Taplin, and have given notice for one to be erected in Vic-toria-street, and have caused removal of nuisance from Bedford-street.
A report comes from Wellington that the Ministry not being satisfied with the Property Tax paper returns, have summoned a Committee of Bank Managers to examine them, to see that persons had not under-valued their property.
