It was feared the Government were not going to metal the Mountain-road after twice calling for tenders. It now appears that the tenders received were not suitable, and fresh tenders are to be called for. The road is still in an almost impassable condition for wheels, although not so bad for horses. One or two of those who purchased at the late sale have commenced occupation by ploughing and clearing. I believe the Maoris are aware of this, but have not up to the present made any opposition, nor do I expect they will to any great extent. Messrs Brett and Chalmers continue to improve from the effects of the coach accident. Persons travelling to New Plymouth complain very much of the inconvenience of railway travelling. The pace is slow, the stoppages provokingly numerous, and to cap the whole thing, the passengers have at present to wait on a bare platform at Senlry Hill until the train goes to Waitara and back. This is in consequence of one of tne engines coming to grief through old age. It would appear when an engine is wanted for Taranaki the authorities go over all the refuse stock and send the worst one they can find. 1 venture to say there is no paying line in New Zealand that has such wretched rolling stock. Read, Heenan, Horner, and Taplin batted well for Patea; whilst Beresford, Miller, Farrington, and Fraser did likewise for Hawera. The ground was in favor of the bowler, owing to the heavy rains the previous night. The Patea team was unfortunate, owing to the absence of Messrs Fetch, Pringle, and Kitching.
