I VELLINGTON DIOCESAN SYNOD.
At the third annual session of the eighth synod of the Diocese of Welling" ton, the Bishop as president delivered his opening address, consisting mainly in a very severe ami incisive criticism of the proceedings during the last triennial session of the General Synod (held at Christchurch last April), a large part of which his Lordship condemned as ultra vires, and much of the rest as highly inexpedient, while he questioned whether its whole proceedings were not completely invalidated by the anomalous position occupied by (he missionary diocese of Melanesia. He also strongly disapproved the conduct of the General Synod in endeavoring, by an irregular resolution, to over-ride ihc action of the Wellington Diocesan Synod, although no cause had boon shown for such interference. The General Synod had shown lunch eagerness to do (he work of parish vestries. Ho also dissented from the action of the General Synod in respect to Biblo-roading in schools and to the temperance movement. The real enemy of the church was speculative infidelity, which it was the fashion euphemistically to call “ honest doubt.’’ He referred with regret to the death of Mr George llmiter, and to the resignation of the Rev. Mr Newth. The. Bishop concluded by invoking the Divine blessing upon (lie deliberations of the Synod.
