RAWERA.

[from our co r rbs ro n de nt , J BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL , Wednesday Evening. Subscribers may pay accounts to Mr Bate, agent for the Mail.

Many friends of Mr W. J. Furlong will be pleased to learn that he is on his way back to Ilawcra, and will make an addition to the population in the shape of a wife* He was married in Ireland just before leaving. He will probably arrive about the end of the year.

It is understood there is to bo some sort of demonstration at Parihaka over the returned ploughmen. Many Maoris are going there, and the pahs on the plains are quite deserted. Werewerc, Mawhitiwhiti, and other large settlements are left empty, the whole population having cleared out. It is remarkable that these

pahs, though once the most thickly populated on the Plains, arc now without inhabitants, solely owing to the Tc Whiti influence. Many think the Government are entirely to blame in this matter, for hoisting Te Whiti on a pedestal from which the Maoris could sec him afar oflE; and no doubt the Grey Government is a great deal to blame for their manner of dealing with the fanatic, but not altogether, as he has had a good hold upon the native minds on the coast during the

last seven or eight years. The second filing of the Hawera Light Horse for the Officers’Cup took place on Saturday, and resulted in Trooper Flint winning with a score of 45; Sergeant Bayly, the previous winner, being fourth with 40. The usual monthly parade took place in the afternoon, but there was a poor muster in consequence of the above firing.

The cricket match Waihi, Normanby, and Ngaire v. Hawera takes place next Saturday.
