WHOLESALE DISMISSALS.
A CANTERBURY PROTEST. Tiie startling intelligence about the reductions which the Government intend to carry out requires the serious attention of the community. It is difficult to believe that any Government would resort to the extreme step of dispensing with the services of every Inspector and SubInspector in the police force of both islands. The fact is, that those officers serving in Canterbury and Westland have had notice that their services will not be required after the 31st of the present month. Hence, we presume that if all the officers arc dispensed with, except the Superintendent in these districts, all the officers in the rest of New Zealand will likewise get notice to quit the service. The very idea is enough to make one stand aghast. It is very much like dismissing all the officers of an army, leaving the Commander-in-Chief and the noncommissioned officers to get along as best they can. Protests against useless servants are common enough in the world ; but no one ever heard that the whole of the officers in the police service are to be looked upon as surplusage.—Lyttelton Times.
