Great indignation is expresseed here touching the arbitrary dismissal of-so many inspectors and sub-inspectors of police, without even giving them the option of being reduced to sergeants. ' MORE FENCING. Wellington, Monday. The Parihaka fencers, instead ot fencing to-day, blocked the road with rubbish. The constabulary were sent to clear it, Mr Thompson, the interpreter, was sent to-day to Parihaka with a bundle of copies of Bryce’s letter to Wiremu Kingi for distribution amongst the natives. ILLNESS OF MR MANSFORD. Wellington, Monday. In consequence of the severe illness of Mr Hansford, R.M,,an application has been made to the Government to grant him leave of absence for twelve, months.
THE PREMIER. Wellington, Monday. The Hon. J. Hall was a passenger per Hawea to Wellington yesterday. RETURNED PRISONERS. Wellington, Monday. Big Jim, the released native prisoner who died on his way from Lyttelton to Waitara, was the identical Jim who acted as guide to the 57tli Regiment in the late wav, and was so useful to the Government in those troublesome times.
NATIVE COMMISSIONERS. Wellington, Monday. Mr William Williams, native land purchase Commissioner at Patea, will leave the service at the end of this month. His retirement is due to resignation. WELL-BRED THIEF. ‘Wellington, Monday. The man Walter Frank Thomas who was sentenced to-day to three months imprisonment for larceny is a brother to a colonel of the same name in the J British army.
DEATH SENTENCE. Dunedin, 11th. The Jury in the Kyeburn murder case brought in a verdict of guilty against Ah Lee, and not guilty against Lee Guy. His Honor passed sentence of death. FIRE AT NELSON. Nelson, 11th. Kendell’s flax-mill at Wakefield has been destroyed by fire, caused by the friction of a scutching shed, and about 2 tons of flax was destroyed. The engine shed, which is contiguous, was saved by filling the place with steam. No insurance.
