The released Maori ploughmen have requested the Government to land them at Opunaki, instead of New Plymouth, as they wish to avoid Parihaka.
DIVORCE COURT. Wellington, Friday
The Divorce and Matrimonial Courts, for purposes of nullity of marriage, will sit on the 22nd November.
KILLING SMALL BIRDS. Christchurch, Friday
Many clubs have been formed in Canterbury for the suppression of sparrows and linnets. The acting Governor has proclaimed it lawful to kill such imported birds throughout the colony. In Canterbury, before the proclamation, boys were rewarded for killing off same at threepence per 100 eggs.
PLAYING CARDS. Wellington, Friday
The acting Governor has proclaimed that Wellington, Auckland, Dunedin, and Lyttelton shall be the only ports at which playing cards can be landed in this colony ; and any found not bearing the stamp of such ports shall be confiscated, and the owner be subject to a fine of £SO.
COLLECTING BEER TAX. Wellington, Friday
The Commissioner of Customs lias issued the following regulations in connection with collection of beer duty, until special duty stamps have been prepared for use : —Every brewer shall from day to day pay in cash to the collector of the district on all beer sold or consumed daring the previous day the stipulated duty on the same.
MAILS.
Wellington, Friday
The Zealandia, with London mails of the 9th ultimo, loft San Francisco lor Auckland on the 25th September, being in advance of sailing date.
Tho City of Sydney, with the September colonial mails, arrived at San Francisco on the sth instant, two days in advance of contract date.
SHIP LOST WITH CREW. Wellington, Friday Night. The brigantine Jas. A. Stewart was driven ashore at month of Kaipara river to-day. All hands were lost.
