HAWERA.

[from our co r rbspond knt. J

Friday Evening,

I telegraphed you on Wednesday that Major Brown, Civil Commissioner, had received an intimation from the Government that after the end of the present month his services will be dispensed with, at the same time paying him a high compliment for the services rendered to the Government, both military and civil. There are few but will regret the necessity that compels the Government to dispense with so'efficient and popular an officer as Major Brown. He goes into business at New Plymouth and Waitara with Mr P C Morton, as merchants and forwarding agents.

New Plymouth people are jubilant at getting the approval of the new plans for the harbor by the Governor in Council ; and they are boasting that land in their County lias risen 20 to 30 per cent, in conseqnence, I trust this is the case, but I fancy that so long as the Government are selling the Plains land, it will be bard to dispose of land at Taranaki even without such a rise.

At the R. M. Court yesterday, before Mr C. A. Wray, E.M., the Registrar of Births summoned T Ecclesfield for not registering the binh of his child. Fined 5s and costs. Mary Gildroy summoned Mrs Haywood for ill treating one of her cows, also for using provoking and insulting language. Both cases were dismissed. Sergeant of Police v.
