PATEA COUNTY MAIL PUBLISHED Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1880. COUNTY v. ROAD BOARDS.
The question of abolishing the County Council, and transferring the care of roads to the several Road Boards, was raised yesterday at the meeting of the County Council. Mr Hunter had proposed that the Council take over part of the Mountain road near Nomianby, and proclaim it, a County road, the reason being that the Government will not keep the road in passable repair. Mr Bridge opposed this policy, with an amendment designed to abolish the Council and transfer all road management to Road Boards. ' After a short debate, the subject w-as felt to bo too important to vote upon in haste, and was adjourned for consideration at next morithly meetingl Our report of the discussion (held over till Saturday) will show how important it is that the Council should approach a decision on this subject with convictions more matured than those which found : expression .yesterday. MiBridge was evidently unprepared to expound his proposal in all its'bearings. He rushed in' with it as a stop-gap to prevent something being done in another direction. The County Council should not be abolished by a side-wind. The counter scheme of management should be set forth and shown to be preferable in efficiency, in economy, and in ; convenience.
