MAD WITH DRINK.

A man is in custody at Wellington for shooting at a woman while drunk. William James Baker, formerly the proprietor of a resturant in Willis-street known as the “ Traveller’s Rest,” lodged in a house kept by Mr and Mrs Tondevold in Ghuznee street. He went home drunk and aroused the inmates, who were in bed at the time, by kicking at the back door. Mrs Tondevold opened the door, when Baker pointed a six-chamber revolver, each chamber loaded, over her head, and pulled the trigger. Alarmed at the man’s condition, she grappled with him, and with loud shrieks of “ Murder !” endeavored to disarm him. Baker was taken into custody, and told the Magistrate ho had been a teetotaller until lately. He was remanded for a week.
