WAVERLEY.

[FROM our correspondent.]

BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL,

Railway Sheds. —The tender of Messrs Swinbourne & McFarlane for the building of the sheds required for traffic at Waverleyr and. Peat’s siding, has been accepted for £1,130, this being the lowest tender. The agreement has been signed, and the contractors have not much time to lose, as the whole has to bo finished within four months of the date of signing the contract. It is satisfactory to find that when a contract can be entered upon with any show of a margin for profit, our local contractors are not far behind in estimates, There is one advantage to a place when local men get a contract such as this. Local tradesmen of any account have a show for work, whereas strangers bring their own workmen, and spend as little in the place as they can help. New Shop, —Mr Rassmussen, our local bootmaker, has set about erecting a shop and dwelling-house for himself near the post-office. It will fill a gap in our main street, and add another family to the list of permanent residents.

School Paddock. —The School Committee have succeeded in getting a reserve of 4 acres, as was previously noticed, for a school paddock, and the Wanganui Education Board has now allowed £l3 for the fencing of the section. This ought to be an advantage to settlers whoso children ride to school, and will tend to the safety of the children attending the school, as horses running loose in a paddock where boys are playing must be attended with danger.
