SAD DROWNING CASE. Dunedin, Monday. On Saturday morning, Robert Shaw, contractor for erecting beacons in the harbor, was shifting a punt for piledriving, and while casting anchor from a small boat he fell overboard. Two brothers Horne, in the pnnfc SO yards distant, jumped into the water and swam to Shaw’s assistance. They seized the body, then insensible, and held him up five minutes, but both becoming exhausted they dropped him and swam for their own lives. The body was found later, quite dead. WAIMATE PLAINS. Pnngarehu, Monday. Another fencing party appeared today, about 42, including boys and old women. They went away at the approach of the A.C.’s. It is said the natives are surprised that we did not kill the fencing prisoners at New PlymouthLyttelton, Monday. The Maori Fencing prisoners from Taranaki arrived here to-day in the Hinemoa. MOKAU COAL MINING. New Plymouth, Monday. The Mokau coal mines arc likely to be worked at last. A promoter of a company is here arranging to work the coal, which is easily accessible iu a good bar harbor. GUN ACCIDENT. Dunedin, Monday. Two boys were rabbiting near Caversham on Saturday ; one was handing a gun to the other when it went off, and one boy, Ollerenshaw, was shot in the side. His recovery is doubtful. VIGILANCE COMMITTEEAuckland, Monday. A settler named Hill having been driven off his dand at Waikare, near Ringarariri, and no reply having been received to appeals to Government for protection, the settlers in the neighborhood threaten to raise a corps to take the law into their own hands. LINCOLNSHIRE DELEGATES. Auckland, Monday. Messrs Grant and Foster offer to purchase land at Te Aroha, if they can come to terms with the Government. WAIKATO FARMING. Hamilton, Monday. Mr Jas. Williamson has commenced the cultivation of his large estate near Hamilton. 1000 acres will be ploughed immediately, and one-third sown with turnips. A vast swamp will be reclaimed. SUSPECTED WRECKING. Christchurch, Monday. Edward Kearns, mate of the ketch Sarah and Mary, has been arrested on two charges arising out of the loss of hat vessel. Some of the property sworn to have been lost in her was found in his possession. VINE GROWING. Auckland, Monday. The French vine dressers left Auckand to-day for Northern Wairoa, where they intend planting many acres of vines at once. DEPRESSIONWellington, Monday. The Post this evening is bold enough to state that 600 houses are empty in Wellington. The Lincolnshike Delegates, Messrs Grant and Foster, have appointed an agent in this colony, to act in facilitating the settlement of farmers who, may come out. The murder of an American missionary, Dr Parsons, is reported from Turkey. He and his servant were shot near Constantinople by Circassians, and their bodies were thrown down a precipice. Artificial diamonds of high refractive power and brilliancy are being manufac tured in the Jura mountains. They will be useful for ceremonial purposes and theatrical dresses, if they do not seriously rival the genuine diamonds as personal ornaments.
