Patea Cricket Club.
The Clue met on Monday evening, at tlie Albion Hotel, to elect officers, &c., Present, Dr Croft (in the chair), Messrs Tennent, Dixon, Drake, F. T. Horner, Coutts, Taplin, W. Dasent, and Houghton ; also new members—JE. C. Horner, and Pringle. Mr G. E. Anson, Wanganui, wrote thus :—“ Seeing that there appears to be a serious falling off in the interest which was once displayed in cricket on this coast, I am anxious to know whether you will co-operate with me in my efforts to revise it. My plan is this ; that a subscription be at once started throughout the four counties, Manawatu, Rangitikei, Patea, and Wanganui; the proceeds to be applied to procuring a suitable cup to be contested annually by 7 the afore-named counties. 1 think from £4O to £SO would procure a very handsome trophy, and one which would stimulate all our young cricketers to strain every nerve to secure it. The first step would be the formation of county clubs ; and in these I would suggest that the subeription be made very small, say 5s per member. I should then propose that all affairs connected with the district, such as the arrangements of the cup competitions, and the appointment of teams representing the district, be managed by a committee consisting of a representative from each county. Please communicate with me touching this matter at your earliest convenience. I would beg to remind you that there is no time to lose, as the cricket season is already on the eve of commencement. I may remark that I shall be happy to contribute £5 myself towards the cup fund.” Resolved that the secretary write to the Waverley, Waitolara, and Hawera clubs asking if they arc desirous of taking steps to form a County club. New members were elected as follow :—E. C. Hornen Pringle, H. Gibbons, and O’Grady. Mr Taplin was re-elected honorary secretary and treasurer ; and in acknowledging the complimentary expressions, he said the cricket pitch is not in excellent condition, but can be made fit for play with a little labor. Pie hoped the disputed use of the ground for other games had now been arranged amicably. Mr Jacomb was elected captain, and thanks were accorded to the retiring captain. A committee was elected thus :—Messrs Tennent, Pringle, and Dr Croft. A vote of thanks was accorded to Mr Taplin for his zealous services during the past year. The opening match of the season was fixed for Saturday next, married v. single.
