WAVERLEY.

[FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.] BRANCH OFFICE OF THE 31 AIL. Friday Evening. The Young Men’s Mutual Improvement Society held its usual fortnightly meeting in the school-room on Thursday evening. Mr Henry Law gave a reading entitled “ Little Tim,” l>y David Macrae, which was very well received. Mr G. Mackie followed with a reading on political economy, subject “ Taxation,” which contained much useful information ; after which Mr Barclay gave a recitation from Scott’s “Lady of the Lake.” At the close of the meeting, the president (Mr Bridge) passed a high compliment on the excellent style of Mr Law’s reading, pointing out that good reading docs not consist in pronunciation alone, but in that combined with a full appreciation of the sense of the author. At tVic next meeting 1 tlic subject for discussion is “ Republicanism vermis Monarchy,” which presents a fair field for shewing specimens of both, with the usual advantages and the contrary. The School Committee met on Thursday evening ; present, Messrs Thurston (chairman), McDonald, Dickie, and Mason. The business was routine, with the exception of a communication informing them that four acres of the town reserve had been granted for the use of the school. This is certainly a boon not to be lost sight of, and the Committee, with commendable promptnesss, started a subscripion list to defray the expense of at once fencing in the section. Rifles and Cavalry. —Wo are to have a gala-day to-morrow, in the way of a general muster of our volunteers. It is to be hoped the day may be favorable, so as to give no excuse for absence on that score. Nothing detracts so much from such meetings as a thin attendance, for this damps the spirits of actors and onlookers. It is to be Loped that tLcro ■will bo a full muster of both companies, and a clear day in which to enjoy the outing* The annual meeting of the cavalry corps is to be held in the evening.
