WAVERLEY.

BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL, Friday Evening. Town Hall.—On Wednesday evening the Town Hall Committee met to see the effect of the new drop scene when the ball was lit up. The picture represents some Italian scenery and looks very well. The committee have ordered two wings to be painted to mutch, so that the Waverley ball will be in all parts completely furnished. It ought [to bo mentioned that the contract for the painting, &c., was taken by Mr Ilolditch, of Wanganui, who has certainly shewn no inclination to skim his work, and has proved himself an adept with the brush. The Young Men’s Mutual Improvement Society held their usual fortnightly meeting on Thursday evening, when there was a fair attendance. The debate on the Financial Position of New Zealand was continued, and the decision by the votes was arrived at, that the railways were ruining the country, as while they were only paying 2-\- per cent, on working expenses, the timber was rotting, and the lines were to renew. A vote of thanks to Mr W. Milne, who had led off the discussion, was proposed and carried, when, after some other business had been transacted, the meeting was brought to a close
