It is stated that the inquisitorial features of the paper arc eliminated ; but that remains to be seen. The time for sending in this new return may be extended to the middle of October. v -Railway accident. Oaraaru, Friday. v . An accident occurred to a tram at Oamaru in a singular manner. The cow-catcher caught up a horse and did not throw him off, but the horse threw off the train. No lives were lost. DEMAND FOR COAL. Auckland, Friday. There is a great demand here for Bay of Islands coal, the supply not being sufficient. WANTED, A MEMBER. Dunedin, Friday. Waikaia is going a-begging for a member. Mr Feld wick, late member lor Invercargill, has been requested to stand, but declines. Mr Joyce is now asked to stand, but he is doubtful. NEW STEAMTLINE. Wellington, Friday. The first of the new direct line of steamers from Sydney arrived here this morning. She brings a full cargo of new teas and many passengers. PATEA RAILWAY CONTRACT. Wellington, Friday. The Manawatu took away 20 men engaged for works at Patea harbor. More will follow. MAORI PRISONERS. Wellington, Friday. The gaoler at Lyttelton has dropped on a grand expedient to quieten the Maori prisoners. He gave them the Yankee fifteen gem puzzle, since which time all is harmony. H9MEWARD SHIP. Christchurch, Friday. The Loch Awe, barque, cleared and sailed for London to-day. KILLED WITH BRANDY. A boy named Wallace died in Christchurch Hospital to-day from drinking most of a bottle of brandy. OUTWARD SHIP. Tho Anne Melhuish from Newcastle arrived last night at Lyttelton. She reports that a passenger named Thomas Synan jumped overboard and was drowned. THE GOVERNOR’S DEPARTURE. Wellington, Friday. The retiring Governor leaves here tomorrow, per the Eotomahana. The Chief Justice will be sworn in as Acting Governor until the arrival of Sir Arthur Gordon. _____
