HAWERA.
[f U O M OCII 00 U U ESI'OXD K X T. ] BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL, Monday Evening. The Hawera Light Horse held their usual monthly inspection parade last Friday afternoon. Only about 35 showed up out of a roll of 80. Major Noakc was present, and the men were put through the sword exercise. Most of the troop are adverse to the sword altogether as a useless weapon in case of any clistuibanco with the Maoris, and also for the reason that few persons in volunteer corps become good swordsmen for the simple reason that they have not that time to devote to it as regular troops have ; and there is still another reason, that as revolvers have been supplied to the corps the necessity for the sword has been done away with. The revolvers supplied last Friday" are first-class weapons and thoroughly new. Dr Lemon, general manager of telegraphs, passed through here on Saturday last, lie had come from New Plymouth by way of the coast and inspected the newly opened lino by that route. Messrs Berry and Newman arc pushing on with their railway" contract with as much despatch as possible considering the bad weather we have bad lately". It expected that part of Mr Bassett’s contract, about four miles this side of Stratford, will be opened for traffic during next month. The Choral Society intend bolding a concert shortly in aid of themselves, in order to enable them to procure a piano. They have a great many honorary members on their books, which shows that Hawera is not devoid of a musical car.
