Education Board.
At the monthly meeting of the Education Board held at Wanganui on Wednesday, the matters relating to this. district were as follow : NORMANDY. The resignation of Mr H. Hill was read and accepted, and it was resolved that effect bo given to the recommendation of the Committee, and that Mr McCutchan be appointed, subject to his presenting himself for examination in January. A letter from Normanby was read enquiring whether the Board would permit the Committee to supplement their receipts by letting an acre of ground, the site of the old school. Eesolved, That permission be granted to the Committee to make the best use they could of the land for the present. Also, letter enclosing account from Patea Mail, and referring to rent charged to Mrs Hill for the use of the schoolhouse. It was explained that some time ago the house was moved near the school at the request of the Committee, to enable the master to look after the children during play-hours. This had been done, and now the master leased the house to his sister-in-law, and resided nearly as far away as before. It was remarked that, with the house being uninsured, it was inadvisable that anyone but the master reside in it. Mr Coutts explained that the house was not let by the master. He did not receive rent for it. Mr Sanson moved, That the former instructions given with regard to the collection of the rent be withdrawn, on condition that the house was given up. Seconded by Mr Boss, and carried. HAWED A. Letter received in reference to the withdrawal of the capitation, and expressing the hope that only a portion of it would be withdrawn, otherwise this change would mean a change in the Education Act. DISTRICT EXAMINATION’S. Mr Fitzlierbert reported on his examinations in higher education in this district thus : “ I set three separate papers in Latin Grammar, the juniors at Patea doing the same paper as the second class at Wanganui, and the seniors at Carlyle the same as the third class at Wanganui. Carlyle Junior Class: The papers sent in by this class were rather weak and inaccurate, though in some respects fairly done.—Carlyle Senior Class : In tins class I was very well satisfied with the answers sent in. The boys are not so far as those in Class 111., Wanganui, therefore could not be expected to obtain as many’ marks, but taking this into consideration, their work does not compare unfavourably. In conclusion, I would add that I was much pleased witli the general evenness of the work, and that the handwriting, especially that of the girls, was very good in all the classes. EXAMINATION LIST.
