[l- n O M OU II COIIIIKSI’OSDE.V T.] BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL, Wednesday Evening. A bad practice is being pursued by many persons in shooting rubbish on the main road, which is very likely to cause some serious accident. Down at the mill on the Tawhiti road, the workmen threw a lot of refuse on the road, and several travellers have complained about it. Likewise at Normanby a publican is in the habit of throwing his broken glass on the road. The Hoad Board should see to this, and summons those persons who thus offend, NO AIRE ROAD DISTRICT. The meeting re the formation of a separate Road Board fur the Ngaire district, was held at Johnston & Brett’s Hotel on Tuesday at noon. Air W. Dale? Chairman of the County Council, took the chair, and explained that as the settlers for some little distance beyond the Mangawhero stream belonged to the Hawera Road Board district, chose settlers beyond that boundary on to Stratford could only take part in nominating persons for the office of commissioners. Although the County Council has every power to appoint commissioners, he would like the settlors to express their opinion in the matter. After some discussion the following gentlemen were nominated as commissioners ;—Messrs 11. Southey, C. Quin, R. T. Hawke, R. O’Donovan, T. Maby, G. Calvert, and S. Gray. The Chairman explained that although many of the gentlemen nominated were outside the proposed new district, no doubt the Council would elect them, as he had every confidence that they would perform their duties with strict impartiality, and should the new district propose to take in that part up to Ketemarae, the whole would be then fairly represented. This concluded the business after which the gentlemen present formed themselves into a meeting re the Mountain road. It was proposed by Mr O’Donovan, and seconded by Mr McDowell, “That this meeting desire to bring under the notice of the Government the present almost impassable condition of the Mountain road ; that the settlers in Ngaire district purchased their land upon the understanding that the Mountain road between Normanby and Stratford would bo metalled within a short time ; that the settlers earnestly implore the Government to use their best endeavours to make and keep the road in a passable condition.” Mr McCutchan proposed as an amendment, and Mr Robson seconded, “That the settlors have every confidence in the Government as regards the roads in the Ngaire district, and would urge the due consideration of the claims of the settlers south of the Ngaire district to have the Boylan road opened and metalled as the shortest, and affording the only outlet for the settlers in the entire Ngaire district, being the shortest route in continuation of the Mountain road from the Te Eoti ; also to metal the Mountain road from To Roti to Stratford.” After Messrs O’Donovan, Quin, Stuart) Grey, and McCutchan had spoken to the motions, the chairman put the amendment, which was lost.
Mr Barleyman proposed the following addition to the original motion, and Mr McDowall seconded it, “The settlors would ask the Government to metal the road from Stratford to Te Roti, and thence by the Boy!an road toNonnanby,” which with the original motion was carried unanimously. It was resolved that the following gentlemen, viz., Messrs Southey, Gray, Barleyman, and Hunter, wait upon the Hon. Mr Bryce with reference to these resolutions.
The meeting then broke up, after a vote of thanks to the chairman.
