WAVERLEY.

[FROM OUR COIIItESI'ONBENT.] "Wednesday Evening.

Tim Young Mem’s Mutual Imtrovement Society held an adjourned meeting last night when there was a good attendance of members. Mr Wilson Milne opened the debate on the financial position of New Zealand, taking the gloomy aspect of our future as the result of past extravagance in borrowing and expending public moneys on undertakings that did not pay interest. He was followed by Messrs Barclay, Riselcy, Thomas, A.Milne and Bridge, all of whom spoke well. The debate was not finished, as several members who wished to take part in the discussion had not spoken, so that it will be continued at next meeting, which takes place on Thursday, September 2nd. Railway Compensation. —There are still some unsettled claims in this district on the value of lands taken for railway purposes. There is great discretionary power allowed to a valuator, and his use of such power gives sometimes rise to comment. As there is still some chance of the claims referred to being settled out of court it would serve no good to discuss this matter of valuation ; but the quiet whisperings about value and value received or offered, point to a better and apparently more equitable adjustment being demanded and received, or a general opening up of the valuation question, as to value of real estate and damages real or imaginary. Concerts. —The members of the Church of England have not given up the idea of having a concert, as was reported, as the idea has been revived and they meet for practice every Friday evening—while the Presbyterians meet on Tuesday—and some ladies and gentlemen are practising for both concerts.
