PATEA RECREATION GROUND.
Sir, —I notice by your report of the last meeting of the Carlyle Town Board that my name was freely mentioned in connection with the proposal to appoint trustees for the above ground. I have to request space for the enclosed telegrams, and my version of. the affair. Last month,, being about to proceed to Wellington, Mr Taplin desired me to see the member for the district and request his attention to a letter that had been forwarded some weeks previous by the Town Board with reference to bringing the reserve under the Domains Act. On my arrival in Wellington I spoke to Major Atkinson about it, and he informed me lie }i*id not lie*ird of it before. The Under Secretary for Lands was sent for, but he knew nothing of it. It was
then found that the letter had been sent to the Colonial Secretary’s office, and I was promised that the matter should be attended to at once. The Government proposal that th 0 Chairmen of the County Council and Town Board should confer and nominate live or seven trustees docs not meet with approval, and it was hinted at the Board’s meeting that I had arranged matters for a certain purpose. I contend any person has a right to assist in getting the question settled, if a majority of a public body desire it. It may ho said that, not being a member of the Patca Harbor Board, I had no right to take the steps I did to obtain the order in Council for the extension of the Patca Wharf. —I am, &c., W. Pack. The enclosed telegrams arc these : Mr Dale to Major Atkinson. Patoa, August 3. Please say whether I suggested re Recreation Ground trustees, that these should comprise certain persons or members of any particular public body; or say whether any conversation passed as. to mode of appointing trustees. —W. Dam*:. Major Atkinson to Mr Dale. Wellington, August, G. . Re appointment trustees Recreation Ground, you asked mo whether application had been received upon this subject, and requested that I would have the matter seen to. No conversation passed between us as to the mode of appointing trustees, or that the Boaid should comprise certain persons, or members of any particular public body.— H. A. Atkinson.
