Monday Evening,
On Friday evening a number of gentlemen met at tlie Railway Hotel for the purpose of presenting Mr J. R. Hynes with a testimonial and small token of regard. Mr John Handley, after a few appropriate remarks, read the following written testimonial : “Mr Joseph ILpm, A.C.F. Waiiotara, “Sin, —Hearing that yon contemplate leaving your present station, and your residence in this immediate neighbourhood, we, the undersigned settlors and inhabitants of Waitotara and its surrounding district, cannot permit you to do so without offering you an expression of our extreme regret, and so far as lies in empower testifying to our appreciation of (he efficient manner in which 3-011 have carried out your duties (frequently arduous, and requiring tact and discrimination in their performance) during the lengthened period that 3*oll have been resident among us. We have not failed to see and appreciate that your familiarity with the Maori character, and thorough knowledge of their language, have enabled 3*oll to execute your duties in such a manner, and with satisfactory results, that any other in 3*oll r position,equal I 3* zealous, but not possessing those qualifications, could not have succeeded in effecting, lint while on the one hand 3*oll succeeded in using discretion and good sense in carrying out 3*olll- public duties, you have at the same lime not neglected those of a private nature connected with ourselves as private settlers, and have proved yourself a useful citizen of the community at large. We trust that wherever your future lot may bo cast, (he value of your services, ability*, and knowledge, 11103* not be lost to the country* ; and shall feel that if this record of our opinion of them 11103* in a 113* wa3*, in which 3*oll desire to use it, prove useful in promoting 3*olll- future
