SPORTING NOTES.
(By Leoninus.) The Wanganui Jockey- Club, at a meeting held on Wednesday last, arranged to alter the date of the Spring fixture to the 29th October. £3lO will be given in stakes. A programme was also arranged for the Autumn meeting, to be bold in March, £1,700 will be contested for during the two days. The amount of the Cup has been reduced to £6OO. The prizes for other races have been increased to compensate for the reduction. Altogether the bill-of-fare should have magnetic attractions for sporting men. I understand that the Waverley-Waito-tara Racing Club will meet in a few days for the election of officers, and to draw up a programme for the annual meeting. Mi Morecroft, of Hawera, passed through Patea yesterday on his way- home. He had with him a Patea Derby- candidate known as The Barb. It is questionable whether this horse will be a starter. As there arc only- some five or six horses engaged in the Patea Derby for 1880, the event of £IOO sovs. may be reduced to a semblance of a race, as it was last y-car.
