SPORTING NOTES.
(By Game Cock.) The shooting season for 1880 terminates on Saturday next, and sportsmen will have to lay aside their appliances for another nine months. Game has been very plentiful, considering that no birds were let go in this part of the district ; and notwithstanding the assertions of some of our “ crack” shootists to the contrary, I must say that so many birds and in such variety were never before seen in the Patea County. Pheasants have increased beyond doubt, and although I myself have shot only nine brace and a half, I know five persons who took out licenses who have secured over 100 brace between them, while one gentleman informs me that he has secured over sixty pairs of ducks. Californian and Tasmanian quail are largely on the increase all over the County, and pigeons bavebeen unusually numerous, especially in the vicinity of Waitotara, where during one week, from a small pine bush, over three hundred were taken. The Hawera Gun Club will hold a tournament shortly. The Secretary is arranging for a supply of pigeons from tl* neighbourhood of Patea,
