Ultimatum to Turkey.
COERCION BY GREAT POWERS WARLIKE PREPARATIONS. London, 26th. It is expected that an ultimatum will be sent to the Porte, summoning it to satisfy the claims of Montenegro under the tioaty of Berlin, within three weeks. The Turks are preparing for war. A levy of all men capable of bearing arms is being made in Montenegro, with a view to enforce its claims. THE QUEEN’S INTERVENTION. PRIVATE NOTE TO SULTAN. It is stated that the Queen has sent a private note to the Sultan of Turkey, urging him to yield to the decisions of the Berlin Conference, as required by the Great Powers. Afghan Troubles. THE RIVAL CLAIMANTS. London, 26th, In the House of Commons to-day, the Marquis of Hartington, Secretary of State for India, made a statement concerning Afghanistan and the Ameership. He said that he had been informed that it was impossible yet to enter into any negotiations regarding Candahar and Gandam.-k. It has been decided by the British Government that no foreign influence should be allowed at Cabul, and that no British Resident should be sent there. Possibly it might be found expedient to send a Mahometan Envoy instead of a British Resident, the latter plan having proved disastrous. ADVANCE ON CANDAHAR. Calcutta, 26th. The latest news from Afghanistan states that Ayoub Khan has crossed the river Helniund, and it is expected that 4,000 horsemen will join his advance guard. His cavalry has approached close to the British camp at Girishk, where the troops were despatched to support Sherc Ali as ruler at Candahar.

London, 27th. In the House of Commons to-night, the Dill for compensating Irish tenants was read a third time on a division by a majority of 66. The Irish members voted with the majority. GOLD RUSH IN N.S.W. .Sydney, Wednesday. The rush which has taken place to Temara still continues. There is no water, and the work is mostly stacking.
