HAWERA.
[from our CORRESPONDENT.] BRAXCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL , Wednesday Evening. A couple of gentlemen who have not been long in the district got themselves into a bit of a scrape the other day by going pig shooting on the other side of the river. The land being confiscated, they thought they were quite at liberty to go over and pot the “ rover of the wood but, unfortunately for themselves, some natives having seen them made complaints about the affair to Mr Parris, who, it appears, seems to have taken the matter very seriously. He at once sent Sergeant Gain'd with an interpreter to enquire into the matter, and refused to discuss the case with the offenders, who, on being made aware of the indiscreet act they had committed, at once went to interview him,and explain their ignorance of the sericus consequences that might ensue from such acts. It is believed that proceedings will be taken against them for malicious injury to property. That the affair happened is, of course, to be regretted ; but I think if it was properly explained to the natives they would not wish to push the matter other than getting paid for the porkers killed. The Government, it is believed, wish to make an example of this case in order to deter others from the.like hunting pursuits. The worst feature in the case is that they shot some tame pigs a very short distance from a pah. The tenders for lining and painting the Town Hall have this week been accepted. This will greatly improve the appearance of the interior of the building, and will not make it so trying to performers. There were ten tenders received for this small job, which shows that carpenters have not their hands very full at present; still they seem disinclined to leave the place, having, like everybody else, a thorough belief in its future prosperity. The weather during the last day or two has been very wet, but we have had such grand weather so far, that we might expect some dirty for the next month or so. There has been some enquiry - about the Ngaire land now in the market, and no doubt it will increase before the day, for applications to bo received.
Mi’ W. Murray Thomson announces, a large stock of nursery plants for sale on Saturday.
